What is Ortho-K?

What is Ortho-K?

Ortho-K (Ortho-keratology) corrects short sightedness with a contact lens.

Sleeping in the custom made, rigid contact lens flattens the cornea (the front surface of the eye) which in turn corrects short sightedness.

When should I wear Ortho-K?

You wear Ortho-K lenses only overnight, removing them first thing in the morning.

Will I still need glasses throughout the day?

No, you will not, because the Ortho-K lens reshapes your cornea overnight. This removes the need to wear glasses or soft contact lenses throughout the day.

How long does one lens last?

On average, up to about 2 years unless damaged or lost.

How do I keep them clean and sanitary?

Gently rub over the lenses using clean fingers and the specialized cleaning solution. Store them during the day in the special hard contact lens case submerged in the solution.

Can I use the same solution that I do for my normal contacts?

Only if your normal contact lens is a hard/rigid lens. Any soft lenses (daily or monthlies) Use a different type of lens solution which cannot be used with Ortho-K lenses. But don’t worry, we always have the solution in stock.

What should I hope for long term?

Ortho-K lenses are generally used to slow or stabilize myopia (short sightedness). Long term Ortho-K lenses do not take away myopia (the same as glasses cannot), but there will be no need to wear any form of correction throughout the day, whether that be glasses or soft contact lenses.

Can’t I just get Lasik surgery?

For Lasik surgery you need to be over the age of 21 and have not had any vision changes for over 2 years. Some adults may opt for the surgery instead of an overnight lens, however this is not possible for children.

What happens if I lose or break a lens?

Simply give us a call and we can order another one. Each lens is custom made to fit your eyes, and can generally be replaced within a week. If this happens within the first 6 months of purchase and is found to be the manufacturer’s fault, we simply replace the lens free of charge.

Why should I get Ortho k?

Ortho-k typically stabilizes short sightedness, so it does not worsen. Because conventional glasses and soft contacts do not, they actually increase likelihood of myopia progression. As a bonus, Ortho-K removes the need to wear glasses or soft contact lenses in your daily life. Think about sports, cooking over a steamy stove, or being outside on a rainy day with nothing on your face to blur or fog.
